Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Cyber Valley Building in Stuttgart

Laying the Foundation for Europe’s AI Future

Cyber Valley marked a major milestone on May 15 with the official groundbreaking of its new research building on the Max Planck Campus in Stuttgart-Büsnau. The three-story facility will offer 7,400 square meters of space for robotics and artificial intelligence research.

The ceremony was attended by Petra Olschowski MdL, Minister for Science, Research and the Arts of Baden-Württemberg; Prof. Dr. Christoph Keplinger, Managing Director of the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems (MPI-IS); Prof. Dr. Patrick Cramer, President of the Max Planck Society; the Mayor for Youth and Education of the City of Stuttgart, Isabel Fezer, the Rector of the University of Stuttgart; Prof. Dr. Peter Middendorf, Rector of the University of Stuttgart; and architect Tobias Döring of hammeskrause architekten.

“The groundbreaking ceremony for our new Cyber Valley research building in Büsnau marks a significant milestone. It highlights our strong commitment to positioning Baden-Württemberg as a leading hub for AI research and innovation. The new facility will offer our scientists optimal working conditions and cutting-edge technical infrastructure. It is designed as a collaborative center, where talents from different disciplines will come together to shape the next generation of AI innovations. We look forward to the scientific breakthroughs that will emerge from Cyber Valley in the years ahead!” said Minister Olschowski.

The building will house flexible labs, co-working spaces, and a nine-meter-high, column-free research hall spanning over 1,000 m². A 150 m² data center will support high-performance AI computing with top-tier energy efficiency.

With just over €50 million in funding from the Max Planck Society and the state of Baden-Württemberg, the building is set for completion by the end of 2027. It complements the recently completed Cyber Valley Building in Tübingen, reinforcing the region’s role as a European leader in AI and robotics.
